Coach Heaton continues to compete and enjoy success as a player Last Changed
2012-02-14

In addition to her coaching and teaching duties, Women's JV Head Coach Tessa Heaton somehow finds time the to play competitive soccer in the Greater Atlanta Women's Soccer Association (GAWSA) adult league for the Lazers from West Gwinnett.

Having won the GAWSA league championship for 2011, the Lazers went on to compete in a regional tournament, called the GNOWSL Mardi Gras Tournament, which was held in New Orleans this past weekend.

The Lazers enjoyed a successful run, having beaten teams from Louisiana 1-0 and 5-0 and losing only one match 1-0 to a team from Texas. Because they carried two shutouts during tournament play, the Lazers made it through to the finals.

In the final match, the Lazers faced a team from Texas in 34-degree temperatures. However, the Lazers, being true to their name, were hot in spite of the weather, winning the tournament with a 1-0 result in the final.

Congratulations to Coach Heaton and the Lazers from West Gwinnett.

Annual DHS Soccer Season Kick-off Banquet Last Changed
2012-02-13

Hello Parents and Players,

Each year, the DHS Soccer Booster Club hosts a kick-off banquet at the start of the season for all players placed on a team. This year the banquet will be held on Friday, 3 February 2012, at 7 p.m. in the DHS Cafeteria. All players that make a team must attend with at least one parent/guardian. Documents requiring parent signature will need to be filled out at the banquet.

About the Banquet

At the banquet, we will share information, collect DHS Soccer Booster Club member dues, and distribute player uniforms. Parents will also have an opportunity to buy spirit wear. Additionally, Coaches will speak to the parents and also meet with their respective teams. Naturally, you and your parent(s)/guardian will have an opportunity to ask questions.

As tradition dictates, the menu will be Italian and will be provided by the players. We request that each player bring the item(s) listed below:

Girls Varsity:   Pasta dish or pizza to feed 12

Boys Varsity:   Pasta dish or pizza to feed 12

Girls JV:           Dessert to feed 12, plus 1 case of water or Powerade/Gatorade

Boys JV:           Salad to feed 12, plus 1 case of water or Powerade/Gatorade

About the DHS Soccer Booster Club

The DHS Soccer Booster Club’s sole purpose is to support the DHS Soccer program, its coaches and players. In addition to paying the annual dues, parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to actively support the DHS Soccer Program by participating in Booster Club activities.

Funding the Program

During the banquet, we will provide an overview of the annual budget; however, the majority of the money required to fund the program comes from member dues. The budget is supplemented by the sale spirit wear, as well as other fund-raising activities (e.g., concession stand sales, coca-cola product sales, yard sale, and alumni game). We understand that some families may find it difficult to meet their financial commitment to the program. Alternative arrangements may be discussed on an individual basis.

The Bottom Line

At the banquet, we will be collecting member dues and selling spirit wear. Payment may be made by cash or check. In addition, Booster Club dues may be paid online using PayPal. You may use the price list below as a guide.

News You Can Use - Web-based Training Designed to Improve Soccer Skills Last Changed
2012-02-13

attention players

EA SPORTS in association with US Soccer produced some interactive web-based training designed to help players improve their skills. Although the program is designed for younger players, it covers are the same skills that we need work to improve from a technical standpoint. Since it’s animated, it kind of fun to watch. And it’s free!

The benefit of this web-based training is that players can watch it on their own time, at their own pace, and at any time… even when it's raining outsidde. This gives players an opportunity to review a skill a few times until it’s really clear in their mind. Then the next time they come to train, they will be better prepared to perform the skill in a live setting.

Duluth Soccer begins the year with a new Treasurer Last Changed
2012-02-13

Hello everyone,

I am pleased to announce that Mike Miller will be assuming the role of Treasurer for the Duluth High School Soccer Booster Club, Inc. effective immediately.

Mike Coulombe has already begun to help with the transition by helping Mike Miller become oriented to his new role and continue in a supporting role throughout the 2012 season.

We are very fortunate to have the outgoing Treasurer and incoming Treasurer work closely together for an entire season. It’s also ironic that both men are coincidently named “Mike.” All this contributes to operational continuity, reduced pressure on the incoming officer, and what I am confident will be a very smooth transition.

Please join me in congratulating Mike Miller as he steps into his role as Treasurer, which is critical to the operation of any successful club. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Coulombe for his untiring service to Duluth Soccer over the years.

see you on the pitch,

Dean Starovasnik, President
